Creative Salon to be replaced by new 9-story development
The grassroots arts group C4 — Concerned Citizens For a Creative Community — is vacating its current downtown space known as "The Salon" to make way for a new, multistory development.
C4 held its last open mic night at the building Thursday. The group will continue to host events at venues around town while it searches for a new home.
The Salon, located at the intersection of 1st Avenue and 4th Street downtown, will likely be demolished next spring or summer so work can begin on the nine-story project.
The new 64,000-square-foot building is expected to include condominiums, office space and a restaurant on the ground level. Midwest Landing, the real estate firm behind the proposal, expects the project to cost $15-20 million.
The owners of the building had let C4 use the building for the past couple years for free, as long as the group paid for utilities. It was frequently used for performances and events, from film showings to poetry slams.
Sean Allen, co-owner of Midwest Landing, said now that the space is vacated, he's not sure whether to paint over the building or leave it as a community art piece. He's asking the community for their input:
