MnDOT seeks applicants for new Zip Rail advisory committee
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for a new citizen advisory committee that will provide feedback on the most recent Zip Rail proposal.
The 25-member committee will not have direct decision-making authority, but will offer community insight for MnDOT and the Zip Rail Technical Advisory Committee, according to a news release.
Representative individuals from the following areas are encouraged to apply to be part of the committee:
- Residents (homeowners, renters)
- Businesses operating on the corridor (a range of size and business types)
- Major employers
- Institutions and schools
- Travelers in the Zip Rail Corridor (existing highway users, and commuters)
- Environmental interests
All applications must be submitted by mail, fax or email by Feb. 27. Selected applicants will be notified the following month.
The Zip Rail would travel directly from downtown Rochester to Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport and/or Union Depot in the Twin Cities
Trains in some sections of the corridor would travel at speeds of about 186 miles per hour, with a projected travel time of approximately 45-50 minutes between the Twin Cities and Rochester.
The estimated cost of the project is somewhere in the ballpark of $2 to $4 billion.
