Rochester 8th-grader offered Division I basketball scholarship

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Hoops phenom Michael Hurt has become the youngest Rochester student ever to be offered a Division I basketball scholarship.

Iowa State extended Hurt a scholarship offer this week, according to multiple media reports. It's the first of what will be many schools competing for Hurt's talents in coming years.

Hurt averaged 15 points and six rebounds this year, his first season as a starter for John Marshall High School, according to the Post-Bulletin.

His older brother, Michael, committed this past January to playing college basketball at the University of Minnesota. The 6'6" forward also had offers from Northwestern, Stanford and Wisconsin.

John Marshall won the Big 9 conference title this past season with a 23-6 overall records. The team got bounced in the section championship game against Lakeville North. Michael and Matthew were both named to the All-Conference team, according to the team's website.

The brothers come from a lineage of local basketball stars.  Their parents, Richard and Jenny, were both star players for the Rockets in the late '80s.
