Mayor seeking applicants for city's new police oversight commission
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede is seeking applicants for the city's recently created Police Policy Oversight Commission.
The commission was created earlier this year in response to nationwide protests over what many perceived as a lack of police accountability.
The seven-person committee will review and comment on the police department's policies, practices and procedures. It will also make suggestions to the department and implement educational initiatives for officers and the community.
Mayor Brede will appoint five members to the commission "based on their interest and involvement in social justice and human rights."
The Olmsted County Human Rights Commission and the Rochester branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will recommend candidates for the other two positions.
Members will meet at least four times a year. The deadline to apply is April 17.
