Jan 6 Honkers will call Mayo Field home for at least another five years

The Rochester Honkers baseball club will continue to call Mayo Field home for at least the next five summers.

The park board on Tuesday unanimously approved the team's lease through 2020. The deal also gives the club the option for automatic renewals for each of the following five years after the initial lease expires.

Negotiations had been ongoing since last September. As part of the deal, the Honkers agreed to contribute $50,000 toward improvements to the field over the next five years.

The club will pay $17,500 to lease the stadium in 2016, up from $15,190 in 2015. The cost of the lease will increase by 4 percent annually.

Built in 1951, Mayo Field is now one of the most outdated parks in the Northwoods League. The team averaged 1,037 spectators per home game this summer, the third lowest total in the league.
