Report: Marcus Sherels reaches two-year deal to stay with the Vikings
Rochester native Marcus Sherels has reached a two-year deal to remain with the Minnesota Vikings, according to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.
Citing a league source, Tomasson reports Sherels will officially resign on Monday. The terms of the deal were not released. The John Marshall grad has played for the home-state team his entire six-year career.
Listed as 5’10” and 175 pounds, Sherels had anything but a traditional route to the pros. He walked on to the Gophers football team at the University of Minnesota, ultimately earning a scholarship as a defensive back.
After college, Sherels went undrafted but received an invite to Vikings’ 2010 minicamp and landed a spot on the team’s practice squad. He was eventually promoted to the active roster, and made his NFL debut in the season finale.
Since then, he has become one of the most formidable punt return specialists in the NFL. Last season, he broke the Vikings team record for most career punt returns for touchdowns.
According to multiple media reports, Sherels visited the New York Jets earlier this week but left without reaching an agreement.
