Mac's Café to close after nearly seven decades in downtown Rochester

Mac's Café, a fixture of downtown Rochester since the mid-20th century, will serve up its final omelette next month.

An employee confirmed to us this afternoon that its last day of business will be Friday, Dec. 8.

Mac's, which first opened in 1949, has been a regular draw over the years for locals and visitors alike. Its location on Peace Plaza has made it a popular — and convenient — stop for patients traveling to Rochester from every end of the world.

News of the restaurant's closure was first reported by the Post-Bulletin. Owner George Psomas told the paper, "I've worked here since I was 10 years old. I'm really proud to have been a part of it. I'm proud of everyone I've gotten to work with."

Responding to today's news, one Facebook user stated: "That is terrible, one of the last [diner] style restaurants left. I have personally know the owner and his family for over 40 years and you could not find a genuine down to earth family that makes you feel like part of the family. Best of luck to them we will all miss Mac’s."

The street-level spot occupied by Mac's likely won't stay vacant for long. Psomas said a pair of "large entities" from the Twin Cities have already put offers in on the space.
