Med City Taxi buying Yellow Cab

Med City Taxi buying Yellow Cab

Rochester's two main cab providers are joining forces.

Tim and Tina Fliehr, owners of Med City Taxi, are finalizing a deal to purchase rival Yellow Cab, according to a Med City Taxi spokesperson authorized to discuss the agreement. Yellow Cab was recently purchased by Steve Elwood, owner of R&S Transport.

Under the deal, both companies would continue to operate on the streets under their current names. They would share the same dispatching service, among other resources.

All Yellow Cab drivers, according to the spokesperson, are being offered the opportunity to keep their jobs. However, drivers will be required to become independent contractors.

The goal is to become more competitive with transportation network companies, such as Uber and Lyft, which have upended the taxi industry since launching in Rochester earlier this year.
