Rochester poised to eliminate all local restrictions on liquor sales
The Rochester City Council voted unanimously Monday to begin the process of removing all local restrictions on liquor sales.
Doing so will prepare the city to begin allowing Sunday liquor sales once a new state law goes into effect on July 1. The Minnesota Legislature recently passed a bill ending the state's 159-year-old prohibition of Sunday liquor sales.
Current city rules ban Sunday sales, meaning the city needs to pass a new ordinance to fall into line with state law. The measure will go before the council again this spring. At that time, the council will decide whether to open the issue up for a public hearing.
