Storm warning: Mild weather to give way to wintry mix of rain and snow

A winter storm warning has been issued for much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday evening.

Total snow accumulation could reach 6 to 8 inches for many parts of the region, including Rochester. With temperatures in the mid-30s expected for Tuesday, the precipitation could begin with rain before turning into snow.

The heaviest snowfall rates are expected Tuesday between 6 p.m. and midnight — with rates around 1 inch per and some thunder possible.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse is warning of difficult travel conditions for the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. "The expected wet nature of the snow will result in roads quickly becoming slippery and hazardous," says the NWS.

If you must travel, be prepared by keeping extra flashlights, food and water in your vehicle. Stay updated with latest weather alerts and road conditions.
