MetroNet breaking ground on fiber optic network
MetroNet is set to begin work this week on its fiber optic cable system.
The company, according to a map on its website, plans to start construction in northwest Rochester before expanding to other parts of the city.
The arrival of MetroNet marks the first major challenge to Charter Communications, which currently dominates the local market.
The Rochester City Council approved a five-year franchise agreement with Indiana-based MetroNet in February. As part of the deal, the company has committed to covering 80 percent of dwelling units within five years.
A news release from the city says construction activity “will begin in limited neighborhoods, but will quickly expand to surrounding neighborhoods.” The city encourages residents to watch for mailed letters, postcards, and physical signage as it relates to MetroNet’s progress.
