By selling used books online, this volunteer raised $100K to support his local library
A longtime supporter of the Rochester Public Library is being recognized for raising tens of thousands of dollars in support of the institution.
Since 2004, Al Dollerschell has been selling used books online to raise money for the Friends of the Rochester Public Library, a nonprofit that works to “expand the library’s collections and programs, support special projects, and promote awareness through community involvement.”
When he began his efforts, Dollerschell averaged a little over $100 a month in sales. The money added up over time, however, and through the sale of thousands of books over 17 years Dollerschell hit the $100,000 milestone.
“Libraries are fundamental to the educational and recreational fabric of a democracy,” said Dollerschell, according to an RPL news release. “Anything that can be done to raise funds and promote libraries is worth doing.”
Dollerschell says his biggest sale as a library volunteer came from a 1991 book on investment strategies called Margin of Safety: Risk Averse Value Investing Strategies for the Thoughtful Investor. The book sold for $899 — a price that has held steady, he says, “so check your attic.”
After continuing his volunteer work through the pandemic, Dollerschell recently made the decision to step back from his volunteer work. His retirement caps a 61-year career in libraries, which also included time at Rochester Technical and Community College’s Goddard Library.
Keri Ostby, head of technical services at RPL, said Al will remembered for his knowledge, reliability, and dedication to his work.
“We’re sad to see him leave, and are so grateful for his contributions both as a cataloger and as a steadfast volunteer,” said Ostby.
