Mayo reveals plans for 11-story research facility in downtown Rochester
Mayo Clinic released new plans Tuesday for its latest research facility in downtown Rochester.
The Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Building is now designed to feature 11 floors and 176,000 square feet of flexible laboratory space. That is seven more floors and three times the footprint of the plan presented by Mayo in 2019.
"Research is a key pillar of our 2030 strategy," said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, CEO of Mayo Clinic. "We’re committed to advancing more cures, connecting more patients to our expanded expertise, and transforming health care for people everywhere. And that transformation starts with research."
The announcement from Mayo says the pandemic “has demonstrated the need to grow and accelerate scientific advancements.”
The building, set to open in 2023, will be located on the corner of Third Street SW and Fourth Avenue SW and will feature underground connections to the Opus and Baldwin Buildings.
As for its “high-profile exterior,” Mayo says the structure is being designed to showcase its “commitment to transformative biomedical research.” The project comes as Mayo continues to embark on its multi-billion-dollar investment in the Destination Medical Center initiative.
The building is primarily the result of philanthropic gifts, notably $49.3 million from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation.
