Gray Duck owners plan to open bookstore next to theater
A new bookstore is coming to Rochester’s Cook Park Neighborhood.
Anna and Andy Smith, owners of Gray Duck Theater & Coffeehouse, are putting plans together to open Garden Party Book later this summer at 602 7th Street NW, in the former home to Dwell Local. The store will feature a wide variety of used books along with gifts, cards, and art.
“We want to create a beautiful place that celebrates books and reading and also provides Rochester with another community space to gather,” said Anna Smith, who also works at the Rochester Public Library.
The Smiths say they will take advantage of the proximity of their two businesses by giving customers the option of ordering a coffee from Gray Duck and having it delivered to them at the bookstore.
They also plan to host book release parties, author events, book clubs, storytimes, and crafting sessions, according to a news release.
“Coffee and film have been great community builders, and we think books fall into that same category,” said Andy Smith.
The couple is now working on “business logistics,” which could include launching an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for opening costs.
