Nur-d backs out of Rochester concert, citing show promoter's conduct
Twin Cities’ hip-hop artist Nur-D announced Friday that he will not be performing a scheduled concert at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds, citing recent conduct by the event’s promoter.
“Now I don’t know the ins and outs of politics between promoters, and I know when things get heated some people do and say things they wish they hadn’t,” Nur-d wrote on social media. ”But ultimately it’s important that we treat people with kindness, failing that- respect, failing THAT- decency.”
Nur-d had been scheduled to perform in Rochester on July 29 as part of a multi-day music lineup being put on by Stationary Astronauts.
Recently, the event promoter has faced backlash for his choice to book rapper Prof, who was dropped by his label in 2020 over sexist lyrics and social media posts. Prof has since apologized for his actions.
In his statement, Nur-d, however, did not address the Prof controversy. Instead, he said his decision stemmed from the “actions of those who booked me towards members of the community.”
Nur-d, whose real name is Matt Allen, was apparently referring to a social media tirade by promoter Nick McLaughlin of the Stationary Astronauts. In the video, McLaughlin suggested another music promoter would lose employment and future work for questioning his decision to book Prof.
“It is very important to me that Nur-D shows are an environment where everyone feels safe,” Nur-d wrote. “As concerns from fans and friends alike were brought to my attention, I made the decision that this show wouldn’t be held to that standard. If you’re a Rochester fan that was looking forward to seeing me perform, I am very sorry that I am unable to do so in this way; know that I am bummed also.”
Reached Friday afternoon, McLaughlin described the cancellation as a “mutual” decision. He suggested a “radio clause issue on our end” contributed to the artist dropping out of the concert lineup.
