Congressman Hagedorn announces reoccurrence of kidney cancer
Following tests at Mayo Clinic, First District Rep. Jim Hagedorn announced on Wednesday the reoccurrence of his kidney cancer.
In a news release, Hagedorn called the new diagnosis “surprising considering that just 14 weeks ago no cancer was detected.”
“But, as every cancer survivor knows, you fight the disease each and every day,” Hagedorn said in a written statement. “Even the best of recoveries present unexpected challenges like I am facing.”
Hagedorn, who is serving his second term representing southern Minnesota, was first diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in February 2019. He has since received continued care and therapy at Mayo.
“Since initially being diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer 29 months ago, my doctors consider my response to treatment and recovery as exceptional,” added Hagedorn. “Since that time, I have maintained a full, active schedule in Congress, campaigned aggressively for re-election, and lived and enjoyed life to the fullest.”
Despite the most recent diagnosis, Hagedorn said he remains “upbeat” about the future — thanks to his faith, family, and the fact he is “receiving medical care from the world’s finest professionals at the Mayo Clinic.”
He noted that he and his doctors are “very encouraged by a promising new FDA-approved cure that is available to attack this type of cancer.”
“Be assured, I will continue to fight for America and serve the people of Minnesota’s First Congressional District with the highest level of energy and enthusiasm,” Hagedorn wrote.
Hagedorn also urged anyone who has missed their annual medical exams and cancer screenings to consider making an appointment today, noting “It could save your life.”
