Artists sought for downtown mural project

Threshold Arts, in collaboration with the City of Rochester and Destination Medical Center, is seeking artist proposals for concrete barriers that will be used as part of the downtown sidewalk enhancement project.

A total of 10 artists will be selected from the pool of applicants, with each receiving a $1,650 stipend to paint 10 facades (the barriers are 10’ by 32”). Artists will also receive a $500 materials budget.

Threshold says the murals can either be standalone compositions or part of a cohesive series. Proposals must be submitted by April 11 at noon.

The painted barriers will be used to protect pedestrian detours resulting from the reconstruction of sidewalks along Broadway Avenue, First Avenue SW, and Third Street SW. The project is scheduled to begin in May.

The replacement of the deteriorating sidewalks, according to the city, will help “eliminate the tripping hazards caused by the brick inlay popping out.” Pedestrian ramps will also be improved in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines.

This project is expected to cost $2.95 million and will be funded with DMC funds and tax abatement project reserves.

Work will be staged to limit disruptions to street parking and travel lanes. At least one travel lane in each direction will be maintained at all times.
