New Rochester shop features e-bikes, trikes & more
From the time Nate Nordstrom first rode an electric bike, he knew he was on to something. Little did he know, however, that something would become the start of a new business.
Nordstrom and his family recently opened New Spin Bicycle Shop, 5335 East Frontage Road, in northwest Rochester. It’s the area’s first specialty e-bike sales and service shop.
Nordstrom says the idea of opening the shop had been stirring in his head for a few years after he and his wife, Amy, purchased e-bikes online. While the experience sparked their interest in riding, finding replacement parts and getting the bikes repaired proved to be difficult.
Recognizing the growing popularity of e-bikes, and having enjoyed countless weekends riding with his family, the gears started turning in his head: what if he started a business dedicated to providing the customer service and support that was lacking in his online transaction?
“The number one reason, by far, for opening the shop is to get more people active and just see that smile on their face when they get out on a bike — maybe for the first time in a while — and start doing things they thought they couldn’t do,” shares Nordstrom.
In addition to the area’s largest selection of electric and non-electric bikes, New Spin offers a full service station — meaning when you buy it from them, Nordstrom explains, “we stand behind the product.” That includes repairs, finding parts, and assisting with any warranty claims.
For those new to the e-bike world, New Spin allows customers to test ride the bikes first — while also learning about the different options and price points.
Nordstrom says the bikes — which provide an electric boost as you pedal — can be a game changer for people looking to explore the outdoors or commute through the city.
“It really changes what you can do with a bike,” he explains. “Hills are no problem. Distance is no problem. Hauling stuff is no problem.”
Another key feature of the e-bikes found at New Spin, Nordstrom adds, is how natural it feels to ride them. The bikes come with three sensors — for speed, cadence and torque — making them responsive to the amount of pressure applied by the rider.
“You can get a workout if you want, but you don’t have to,” he says. “How much you use your muscles is up to you.”
With the holidays approaching, New Spin currently has more than 150 e-bikes, non-electric “acoustic” bikes, folding bikes, and more in stock now — with hundreds more bikes arriving in spring. (Due to supply chain shortages, customers are encouraged to submit spring orders in advance.)
Customers can choose from top brands, including Giant, Tern, Orbea, Urban Arrow, TerraTrike, Riese & Muller, Benno, Bianchi, Rambo Bikes, and Segway. New Spin is also an authorized dealer of Freedom Concepts, which produces a full line of special needs bicycles and mobility devices.
