Iconic vocal group En Vogue to perform week five of Down by the Riverside
Update: This event has been canceled due to the potential threat of severe weather.
Next up in the 2022 Think Bank Down by the Riverside outdoor concert series: One of the most celebrated female vocal groups of all time.
En Vogue, featuring Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron-Braggs and Rhona Bennett, is scheduled to perform this Sunday night at Mayo Park. The free show begins at 7 p.m. with a set from the Minneapolis-based duo FènixDion.
Formed in 1989 in the Bay Area, En Vogue broke onto the scene a year later with their debut album Born to Sing, featuring the hit single “Hold On,” which reached number one on the dance and R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
From there, the group went on to sell more than 20 million albums, including 1992’s Funky Divas, which produced five singles, including the chart-topping song "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)”. Other hit singles from the group include “Free Your Mind,” “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” “Don’t Let Go,” and “Whatta Man” (feat. Salt N Pepa).
The group — originally made up of Ellis, Herron, Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones — has also earned seven MTV Video Music Awards and two American Music Awards, as well as seven Grammy nominations.
Their latest project, Electric Café, was released in 2018 — marking the first En Vogue album in 14 years. And through each song and performance since, the group continues to stay rooted in what made them one of the best-selling vocal groups of the 1990s: “Passion and love for what we do, respect for what each person brings to the table, self-empowerment, amazing vocalists and uplifting role models,” says Ellis.
