Charter doubles Internet speeds in Rochester
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Surfing the Web just got a little easier.
Charter Communications, Rochester's sole broadband Internet provider, recently bumped residential connections up to 60 megabytes per second, double the previous speed of 30 Mbps.
The launch of Charter Spectrum, the company's highest level of service, also includes access to more than 200 high definition video channels and advanced voice service that includes unlimited nationwide calling.
The improved service is made possible by Charter's recent upgrade to an all-digital network. The company says it removed outdated analog signals from its network, which took up the most space, and replaced them with more efficient digital signals.
"By regaining that bandwidth in our network, it enabled us to provide more HD channels and open the door to faster Internet speeds and prepare for future innovations," said Kimberly Noetzel, a senior manager of communications at Charter.
The company says customers will now be able to simultaneously stream videos, download music and surf the Web without sacrificing Internet performance.
Customers can begin upgrading their existing connection immediately by resetting their modems. Charter will automatically reboot any modems that have not been manually reset by Jan. 15.
There is no additional cost for the increased speed. Charter charges about $40 per month for Internet service when customers sign up for a full year.
