The district made the announcement in an email Tuesday evening. The closures affect all RPS classes, activities and evening programs. Employees are asked not to report to their offices or assigned buildings.
Several other school districts in the state, including Minneapolis Public Schools, have also announced closures. However, there is no statewide order to cancel school, putting the decision in the hands of each individual school district.
Wind chills are expected to drop below -40 degrees by Wednesday morning.
