Mayo High School debate team wins statewide debate tournament
The debate is over. The group at Mayo High School is the best in the state.
The school's debate team won the Governor's Cup this weekend in South St. Paul. Fifty of the team's 70 members participated in the tournament, according to a report by KTTC. Their topic was the Syrian immigration crisis in Europe.
The team is coached by Olmsted County District Judge Kevin Lund.

In addition to helping out the team, KTTC's Devin Bartolotta provided some nice coverage of Mayo's debate squad prior to the event. After the win, she took to social media to congratulate the team. "...I'm so proud of these kids! Awesome to see their months of hard work pay off."

The school district's superintendent, Michael Muñoz, also congratulated the team on Twitter, writing "Congrats Mayo Debate Team!"
The team devoted significant time to debate practice — about 6 hours per week — in preparation for the tournament. After the win, one person wrote on Facebook, "this should be bigger than sports news."
Or at the very least, equivalent. Nice job, Spartans!
