Mar 28 Rochester native helps school win its first-ever NCAA tournament game

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Rochester's Tyler Vesel just helped the University of Nebraska Omaha men's hockey team win its first NCAA Division I tournament game in school history.

UNO defeated Harvard 4-1 Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana. Vesel, who grew up playing youth hockey in Rochester, scored an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left to seal the victory.

Vesel and the No. 2 seed Mavericks advance to Sunday's Midwest Regional Finalist against the Rochester (New York) Institute of Technology, which is coming off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

The puck drops tonight at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU; the winner will move onto the Frozen Four in Boston.

Vesel, a graduate of Faribault's Shattuck-St. Mary's, had eight goals and 14 assists with UNO this season. He played the previous season with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL, the country's best junior hockey league.

He was drafted in the 6th round last year by the National Hockey Leagues's Edmonton Oilers.
