Formed in the late 1960s, America achieved much of its commercial success the following decade with hits like “A Horse with No Name," “Ventura Highway" and “Sister Golden Hair." In 1973, the group won the Grammy award for best new artist of the year (beating out the Eagles).
Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, two of America's three founding members, are still touring and writing new music. The third original member, Dan Peek, left the band in 1977 to write and perform Christian pop music. He died in 2011 at the age of 60.
The free concerts are held Sundays at 7 p.m. in Mayo Park, located behind the Mayo Civic Center in downtown Rochester.
The following six shows had previously been announced:
- July 12 - Fabulous Thunderbirds (blues rock)
- July 19 - Firefall (soft rock)
- July 26 - Eric Paslay (country)
- Aug. 2 - Rochester Concert Band & Choir
- Aug. 9 - Sonny Knight & the Lakers (blues and soul)
- Aug. 16 - Lucius (indie pop)
