Best towns tournament: Rochester faces Eau Claire in the Sweet 16

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - The Minnesota-Wisconsin rivalry has moved off the playing field and into the woods.

Rochester and Eau Claire are matched up in the Sweet 16 round of Outside Magazine's "Best Towns" tournament. Polls opened Thursday morning and voting will continue through May 18.

Rochester easily defeated Bellaire, Mich and Yellow Springs, Ohio in the first two rounds. Here's an explanation from the website's editors as to why the Med City was chosen for the tournament:

Minnesota’s third-largest city is known for the Mayo Clinic, but less famous is its outside cred. The town has cultivated green spaces like Chester Woods Park, Quarry Hill Nature Center, and Cascade Meadow Wetlands, where residents cross-country ski, hike, and paddle. Plus, Rochester has 85 miles of paved bike lanes for getting around town.

Spearfish, S.D. and Iowa City are the only other two Midwest cities left in the tournament. A champion will be announced on June 5.
