Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to visit Rochester next week

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will visit Rochester on July 2.

Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont and self-identified socialist, is scheduled to attend a fundraiser brunch and town meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Rochester International Event Center.

He is one of four candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president in 2016, the most notable of the group being Hillary Clinton (in comparison, 15 Republicans have launched presidential campaigns).

While Sanders, 73, is considered a longshot for the White House, he has been attracting large crowds in campaign stops across the country. More than 3,000 people turned out to see him speak last month in Minneapolis.

The only other candidate to visit Rochester so far this year is Rick Santorum, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2012. He spoke at a fundraiser on May 11 at the Kahler Apache hotel.

According to his campaign website, Sanders will discuss how to:

  • Get big money out of politics
  • Deal with obscene wealth and income inequality
  • Combat climate change
  • Make college education affordable

The suggested minimum contribution for the fundraiser is $25. Unlike other candidates from both parties, Sanders does not plan to create a Super PAC and is instead looking to raise money from small-dollar individual donors.
