Rochester's newest climbing gym hosting free open house

Rochester's newest climbing gym hosting free open house

Roca Climbing and Fitness is opening its doors for a free day of climbing next weekend to celebrate the opening of its new facility in northwest Rochester.

The gym, which opened earlier this month, features 15,000 square feet of indoor climbing terrain, as well as a yoga studio and fitness area.

Roca's walls are up to 45 feet tall and include a wide range of climbing routes for all ages and experience levels. The gym will host classes and other events, from kids birthday parties to company team-building exercises.

Its owners, Jeremy and Karen Schaar, have a combined 40 years of experience in climbing. Prior to opening Roca, Jeremy has designed and built numerous climbing facilities across the Midwest. Karen is certified in sports medicine and has several years of experience working as a personal trainer.

The grand opening will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to free climbing, Roca is giving away prizes, providing free food and offering discounted memberships.

Rochester is home to one other indoor climbing facility, Prairie Walls, which opened in 1998. The gym has 26 climbing ropes and 10,000 feet of wall space.
