New park in north Rochester to include areas for dogs, community gardens

New park in north Rochester to include areas for dogs, community gardens

A new dog park with community garden plots is being developed in north Rochester, the park and recreation department announced Monday.

River Road Park will be located at the northwest quadrant of 62nd Street and West River Road, only a half mile north of Essex Park. The dog park and gardens will replace spaces lost due to the $33 million 55th Street extension project.

"This park is in a lovely country setting providing an opportunity for our community residents to enjoy this area," says the news release.

The property was acquired in July and development of the park began in August. The first of three fenced-in dog areas should be available for use by the end of October. The remaining areas will open once they are suitable for use.

The garden plots are in the process of being staked and mapped out. According to the parks department, the gardens will be tilled this fall and the sites will be ready for reservation in anticipation for spring 2017 planting.
