Rochester is building a fence to keep drunks from jaywalking
Work is now under way to install a four-foot high fence in the median along Broadway in downtown Rochester.
What for? Apparently to keep late-night revelers from jaywalking.
The city recently awarded a $198,000 bid for the project to KLR Construction Inc. The fence will extend down a busy portion of Broadway between 3rd and 4th Streets south. With a number of bars nearby, the area is a popular spot for nightlife.
According to the public works department, the block "has a long history of pedestrians crossing mid-block and has raised the issue of safety on the roadway."
The department anticipates the wall will curb jaywalking and encourage pedestrians to stick to the crosswalks.
