Bolton to retire from Mayo Clinic in November
Mayo Clinic Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Bolton says he plans to retire this fall — capping a nearly 20-year career with the institution.
Mayo made the announcement Monday morning. Bolton, the second highest ranking executive at Mayo, has served as chief administrative officer since 2013 and as a member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees since 2011. He first joined Mayo in 2002 to become chief financial officer.
In a written statement, Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, president and CEO of Mayo, highlighted Bolton’s recent work to guide the institution through the pandemic and provide leadership on initiatives related to equity.
"I am truly grateful to Jeff for his dedication and service during his 19 years in leadership roles at Mayo Clinic," said Dr. Farrugia. "I have appreciated his partnership and counsel, strong commitment to our mission and patients, excellent strategic insight and strong working relationships with people across Mayo Clinic … He is a wonderful colleague and friend."
Bolton’s other key accomplishments, according to the announcement, include: navigating the 2008 recession, helping establish Destination Medical Center, and expanding Mayo’s presence to the other end of the globe with the addition of sites in London and Abu Dhabi.
"It has been the honor of my career to serve our patients alongside the best staff in health care," said Bolton, whose last day will be November 30. "As I look back at the past 19 years, it is the people I've worked with and what we've achieved together for patients that stand out the most. I am confident in Mayo Clinic's future because of our staff, culture, mission and enduring primary value to put the needs of the patient first."
Bolton came to Mayo from Carnegie Mellon University, where he spent 18 years in various finance-related positions.
Mayo says a search process for its next top administrative officer is already under way. It expects to announce Bolton’s successor this fall.
