Wednesday is deadline to enroll in health insurance that begins Jan. 1
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Minnesotans who want health coverage through the state's exchange have until Dec. 31 at noon to sign up for coverage that begins New Year's Day.
Health care shoppers were originally told they would have to sign up for insurance by Dec. 15 to receive coverage by Jan. 1. However, MNsure officials have twice extended the deadline.

“We extended the enrollment deadline to allow Minnesotans who are eligible for financial assistance ample time to get covered, and to align enrollment deadlines throughout the state,” said MNsure CEO Scott Leitz, according to a news release. “As time ticks down toward this deadline, we urge those consumers who still need coverage beginning Jan. 1 to take action now.”
MNsure officials say the contact center will be very busy leading up to the Dec. 31 deadline. Customers looking for last-minute coverage should expect delays.
In-person help from a MNsure-certified navigator or broker is also available free of charge. In addition to six walk-in enrollment centers, MNsure navigators and brokers can be found throughout the state.
Feb. 15 is still the deadline to get insurance for the year to satisfy the federal health law's mandate. The fee for not having coverage in 2015 is either 2 percent of your yearly household income or $325, whichever is higher
