Rochester Red Kettle campaign raised more than $1.2 million in 2014

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - The Rochester Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign set a new record in 2014.

The organization brought in more than $1.2 million in 2014, exceeding its goal of $1.05 million. KTTC-TV reports that includes more than $400,000 in donations during the holiday season.

In the lead up to Christmas, Salvation Army leaders expressed skepticism about meeting their goal. But the Post-Bulletin reports the campaign received a surge in last-minute gifts during an "unprecedented" four-day challenge match.

"To realize that the results of 2014 Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign well-exceeded its fundraising goal reminds me how much I love living in this community of generous people," said Red Kettle/Christmas Campaign Honorary Chairman Randy Chapman, according to a report by KAAL-TV. "Generous when digging deep for coins, dollars and writing checks, and generous in volunteer hours and hours to ring bells, collect and count money or hosting campaign events."

The Salvation Army will use the money to fund a wide range of programs, including food, housing and health services.

A volunteer appreciation ceremony will be held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Adult Day Program building.
