Two RCTC students nominated for nationwide academic team
Two students at Rochester Community and Technical College have been nominated to a national community college academic team.
The school announced on Friday that Jenna Goldsmith and Andrea Walker, both active members of RCTC’s academic honor society, were nominated for their "service, fellowship, scholarship, and leadership.”
Founded in 1927, the RCTC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is one of the oldest in the nation. Its goal is to recognize and encourage academic achievement among two-year college students.
“Our two nominees this year are examples of students whom RCTC should be proud to have enrolled here,” said Jamie Mahlberg, PTK's faculty advisor. “They are both officers of our Phi Theta Kappa chapter, their academic achievements are exemplary, and their commitment to both campus and community service sets them apart.”
The final announcement of the 20-person All-USA Academic Team will be made by next April. In addition to a $5,000 scholarship, winners are featured in the USA TODAY newspaper.
Football championship
On Sunday, RCTC's football team will play Northwest Mississippi Community College for the NJCAA Division III National Championship in Biloxi, Miss.
The game starts at 2 p.m. and will be streamed live online. The P-B reports the Yellowjackets, a non-scholarship school, are underdogs going into the game.
Since 1920, RCTC football has won two national championships ('00 & '07).
It has been a strong fall season so far for the sports department. Just last month, the school's volleyball team took home the national championship.
