Fudge to firearms: New Rochester Scheels now open for business

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Hundreds of people packed the parking lot of the Apache Mall Saturday morning to be one of the first to get inside the new Scheels store.

The sports retailer opened for business at 9:30 a.m. Prior to the doors opening, there were musical performances and prize giveaways in the parking lot.

The 144,000 square-foot store is a collection of fully-staffed entertainment venues, specialty shops and boutiques — offering a similar experience to a Cabela's store. Scheels sells everything from bicycles and skis to running shoes and fishing equipment.

The Rochester store offers the largest selection of guns in southeast Minnesota. Products will range from everyday shooters to $20,000 collectible firearms, notes the company's website.

Notable attractions include an arcade, shooting gallery, and a deli and fudge shop that promises to serve Startbucks coffee.

The company first announced plans in February 2014 to build a store in the space vacated by the former Sears. The new location will employ more than 250 associates.

Scheels has about two dozen stores in 10 states including Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The company is headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota.
