Republican Hagedorn wants to take on Rep. Walz again in 2016

(THE MED CITY BEAT) - Blue Earth resident Jim Hagedorn announced on Tuesday his candidacy for Minnesota's first congressional district in 2016.

Hagedorn, a Republican, lost to incumbent Democratic Rep. Tim Walz in the 2014 election by a nearly nine-point margin. Walz is now serving his fifth consecutive term in office.

“I’m enthusiastically entering the race and will be working full-time to replace Tim Walz and bring a conservative, commonsense voice to Congress,” Hagedorn said in a news release.

The first congressional district spans the southern part of Minnesota from the South Dakota border in the west to the Wisconsin border in the east. Rochester is the largest city in the district.

Hagedorn won the Republican primary last year despite losing the party's endorsement to Byron resident Aaron Miller. His father, Tom, served in Congress from 1975-83.

Walz, a resident of Mankato, is a 24-year veteran of the National Guard and the highest-ranking enlisted soldier to serve in Congress. He serves on House committees for agriculture, armed services and veterans' affairs.
