No laughing matter: Goonie's Comedy Club set to close next month
Rochester may be losing its only comedy club.
The owners of McGoon's Pub and Restaurant and Goonie's Comedy Club, both located in the historic Olmsted County Bank and Trust building on Second Street SW, have reached a deal to sell the property.
According to a report from Laser 101.7 — which has a business partnership with Goonie's — the restaurant will close on July 2 and the comedy club will host its final performances the following weekend.
Mark Klampe, co-owner and general manager of McGoon’s and Goonie's, declined to comment on the sale but did confirm to the Med City Beat that he is searching for a new location in town for a comedy club.
In a post to Facebook, Goonie's management is asking customers who have unused gift cards and tickets "to redeem them over the next few weeks as there is no guarantee that we will find a new location."
Under the sale agreement, according to Laser, the new owners purchased the building and restaurant. Future plans for the space have not been made public.
For the past decade, Goonie's has attracted comedians from all across the Midwest and nation to perform in Rochester. Just this past March, it hosted its biggest name, Hannibal Buress, for a series of sold-out shows.
Here's a look at the remaining upcoming performances.
