RPU customers: Beware of phone scam threatening to cut off service
Rochester Public Utilities is warning customers of a phone scam.
In a blog post published Tuesday, RPU says customers have reported receiving phone calls from scammers claiming to be from the local utility company:
The caller says that they are a representative from your utility company (sometimes they do not even name RPU) and that you are past due. They say that if payment isn’t paid over the phone, then you will be disconnected. Be aware though, that sophisticated technology and newer phone systems make it look like they are calling from RPU’s customer service phone number.
RPU says it will never request bank or secure personal information over the phone unless a customer asks to discuss their account. The company will also never use use threatening language or make forceful demands for payment.
If you receive a phone call threatening to disconnect your service, you should hang up and call RPU at (507) 280-1500.
