Fatal crash reported on SE Minnesota highway (update #3)
(THE MED CITY BEAT) - A fatal crash was reported Tuesday morning in southeast Minnesota.
The State Patrol reports the crash happened on Highway 218 in Steele County (map shows approximate location) just after 7 a.m. A Ford Focus was heading south when the driver lost control, spun out and crossed the center line. An oncoming Ford Edge traveling north struck the passenger's side of the Focus.
The driver of the Focus, 50-year-old Mark Smith of Medford, was killed in the crash. The driver of the Edge, a 31-year-old Austin woman, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Most roads in the area were either partially or completed covered in snow at the time.
Forecasters expect about 1 to 3 inches to fall in the Rochester area on Tuesday. Snow will begin to taper off by the afternoon and turn into light flurries by Wednesday. The storm system is expected to move out of the area by Christmas Day.
